Noumea, New Caledonia
Gabriel Fauré - Requiem
Conductor: Rowan Harvey Martin
Soprano: Rebecca Collins
Bass: Stephen Bennett
Organ: Anthony Smith
Violin: Michelle Higgs
Trip reports:
We were privileged to be hosted by "Les Alizés", a choir in Noumea led by Sarah Briggs. Members of Les Alizés overwhelmed us with their generous support of us during the week of rehearsals and two concerts, on Wednesday 15 and Friday 17 July 2009 in Saint Joseph Cathedral. (See a mention here.)
Les Alizés also hosted a wonderful Bastille Day luncheon (picnic) with the two choirs singing a selection of French songs.
(16 July)
What a wonderful social life there is in Noumea! On Friday 31 July 2009, excerpts of Puccini's 1880 work "Messa" ("Messa di gloria") were performed by another choir in Noumea, from "l'Ecole Territoriale de Musique" (ETM), at the official function for the Third France-Oceania Summit at which Bernard Kouchner, France's Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, led the French delegation. link As reported by a member of both choirs, the security was tight to get in, and at the end "champagne as much as one like, 'petits fours', small variety of pastries...." and the approbabtion of the Director of "l'Ecole Territoriale de Musique" (ETM). Trčs bon, les amis!
