The Llewellyn Choir Awards Program

Meet our 2026 Awardees

Angel Zheng

Hello! My name is Angel, and I'm from Christchurch, New Zealand. I'm currently studying a Bachelor of Political Science and Music majoring in piano performance. I also play the flute; I am currently a piano & choral scholar of the Wesley Music Programme.

I began my journey in choral singing in 2021 and joined the Bel Canto choir under the guidance of Sue Densem, one of the top-tier secondary school treble choirs in New Zealand. I then joined the New Zealand Academy Choir as an Alto in 2023, directed by Rowan Johnston and Elise Bradley. In 2024, we exited the World Choir Games with the 5th highest score out of 180 choirs in the open competition.

I've been constantly in leadership roles in both instrumental and choral ensembles. Alongside choral music, I played in the Burnside High School Orchestra and became a student conductor of the Burnside High School Symphonic Band. Being part of such a dedicated and passionate community would allow me to both contribute and grow as a person, a student and a musician.

I enjoy singing, but choral music in particular! I’m always thrilled to receive advanced choral training and education from this choir. I gradually seek passion not just from the joy of winning competitions, but from “Letting the Music Win” (inspired by Elise Bradley), and from giving back to the community.

Sabut Kharisona

My name is Sabut Kharisona, and I am a Bachelor of Science graduate from the Australian National University in Canberra, majoring in Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology. Originally from Surabaya, Indonesia, I moved to Canberra to pursue my studies. I have been involved in choral music since high school, singing as a bass from 2018 to 2020, where I developed a strong foundation in vocal technique and musicianship. I have also participated in national and international competitions, achieving first place nationally in the mixed group category at the Brawijaya Choir Festival in Malang, and internationally earning first place in the folk category and second place in the mixed category at the Budapest International Choral Festival. More recently, I was a member of the ANU Chamber Choir in 2024, where I continued to refine my ensemble and performance skills. Through the Llewellyn Choir Awards Program, I hope to further develop my vocal and musicianship abilities, contribute meaningfully to the ensemble, and grow as a performer. Looking ahead, I aspire to continue engaging with choral music alongside my career as a lifelong pursuit.

Kyle Flauta

I am Kyle Flauta, I am an 18 year old student and I hope to refine my vocal technique in a professional environment surrounded by like minded singers, building off my previous school based experience.

I started primarily through highschool, where I began music through the flute and our school Concert Band, while also joining my first choir opportunity (aside from church performances) within my school’s junior vocal ensemble. My dedication to the music faculty allowed me extra performances participating in Strike A Chord 2022, where I first learnt the intricacies of chamber music.

In my senior years I transitioned to our school Orchestra playing flute while beginning my major choir involvement within my senior college choir, PCoPA (PC of Performing Arts). Going interstate for minor school competitions, I gained experience singing both tenor and bass, building upon the intricacies of phrasing, dynamics, and blend within our pieces. My involvement further extended to opportunities in barbershop both TTBB and SATB at school eisteddfods against competing schools. Our choir repertoire consisted of contemporary works, jazz, but with heavy focus on choral hymns for our school masses, such as “Ave verum corpus” by Mozart and similar repertoire. Refining my techniques on colour in my senior years allowed me opportunities to sing for school award assemblies, as well as achieving my school’s Penola Faculty for Tertiary Music both 2024 and 2025.

I would classify my voice as a baritone, and have previous experience singing a variety of music, though explicitly classical and similar hymns. Now graduated and in university; I see a strong opportunity to grow my singing in a professional environment through this program and contributing to TLC's performances.
